Teachers in Little Rock refuse to return for the first day of in-person classes
A union representing teachers in Little Rock, Arkansas, warned the school district that educators will not be returning for in-person classes scheduled to start Monday amid concerns over inadequate coronavirus precautions, an internal battle that’s become commonplace as schools struggle to navigate the pandemic.
The union cited “unsafe working conditions,” including a quarter of the people entering buildings not receiving full questionnaires, 37% of the district’s facilities not being properly cleaned and disinfected, many employees and students not wearing or improperly wearing masks, and no social distancing in classrooms.
“This is not a strike” or a “work stoppage,” LREA explained, “We are completely and totally willing to work and serve our students virtually in a manner that keeps everyone safe and alive.” It’s currently unclear how many teachers did not show up to teach for the 21,000-student district, though the Little Rock School District insisted in a response letter that it was committed to keeping schools open and still expected a large number of its “dedicated teaching staff to still be present.”
