The Americans defeated Japan 90-75 at Saitama Super Arena on Sunday to clinch their seventh consecutive gold medal. It’s a streak that speaks to the mastery of women’s basketball in the U.S. The women have not lost a basketball game at the Olympics since 1992, when the Americans fell in the semifinal to the Unified Team made up of players from the former Soviet Union. They won a bronze medal in Barcelona; it’s been nothing but wins and gold medals ever since.
The standout of this year’s Olympics tournament for the Americans was forward A’ja Wilson, who averaged eight rebounds and a team-high 17.5 points per game in Tokyo. She celebrated her 25th birthday on Sunday with another 19 points and a gold medal. It’s a testament to the depth of the U.S. team that Wilson did not pace the team in points in any of their games in the knockout round. Breanna Stewart exploded for 23 of Team USA’s 79 points in their quarterfinal win over Australia while center Brittney Griner led the team against Serbia in the semifinal and in the gold medal game, where she put up 30 points.
