One in five high school seniors vaped marijuana in the last year and 14% vaped it in the last month, the National Institute on Drug Abuse reported. Both numbers doubled in the past two years.
Among the studies, The Lancet, a British medical journal, reported a two to five times higher risk of psychotic disorders for daily consumers of high-THC marijuana compared with people who never used.Marijuana, however, can be especially attractive to young people.
The increased use by teens of marijuana, especially by vaping, which can more than double the potency, comes during what Volkow called young people's"period of greatest vulnerability" of brain development. Along with the overall 14-percentage-point drop in alcohol use among high school students in the last five years, there was a decrease in binge drinking in the 10th and 12th grades. The survey reported more than 14% of 12th graders said they binge drank in 2019 compared to about 19% in 2014. Among 10th graders, 8.5% reported binge drinking compared to 12.6% five years ago.
“We’ve got a lot of emerging issues to consider,” said Swonger. “In the U.S., you’ve got a massive opioid epidemic. You’ve got the legalization of cannabis. You’ve got a vaping epidemic ... There could be an element where young people are distracted with other things they shouldn’t be doing.”People have been vaping for years but now they're dying. Could it be the devices?
