Teens killing badgers, other wildlife in shocking viral trend
Teens in the UK are killing badgers and other wildlife in a worrying trend, sparking concern among animal rights organizations.
During the Covid-19 lockdown, the number of wildlife crimes jumped from 1,056 in 2019 to 1,401 in 2020,One gang of teenage boys in the Burnley used dogs to attack animals, including badgers and deer, and shared more than 180 videos of the killings on TikTok. The group was reportedly banned from keeping animals for ten years. Two members of the gang were fine $600 and $1200 each, and a third member received an 18-week jail sentence,“Wildlife crime soared during the pandemic and remained at record levels this year,” said the CEO of WCL, Dr Richard Benwell in a statement. “Progress on convictions is positive, and we welcome DEFRA’s efforts to stiffen sentencing, but overall that is of little use while the rate of successful prosecutions remains so low.
In spite of the statistics, just 55 individuals last year were convicted of wildlife crimes by local law enforcement, noted WCL.
