When Manchester United's players reported for the start of pre-season, few could have envisioned Jadon Sancho playing as often as he has done.
Having performed professionally during United's tour of the US, both as a left-winger and as a 'false nine', he's put himself in contention to start Saturday's Community Shield clash with Manchester City at Wembley. United will be without Rasmus Hojlund in the capital because of a hamstring injury. Zirkzee, however, is not a natural No.9; he is a forward who will drop deep to get on the ball, link the play and operate deeper than Hojlund.
Zirkzee's versatility can only be a positive for United. His ability to link the play by dropping deep will be a useful tool that Erik ten Hag can make the most of. Therefore, it feels unlikely United will draft in another forward before the deadline, leaving Ten Hag with plenty to ponder in the absence of his star striker. Zirkzee is not a natural alternative, nor is Sancho or even Bruno Fernandes, who Ten Hag has also cited as an option to lead the attack in Hojlund's absence.
