Terrell’s rare 1907 church organ roars with tradition amid North Texas’ boomtown growth | SharonFGrigsby
, this small but classically beautiful Victorian Gothic place of worship — built, along with its organ, in 1907 — stands steadfast.
My guides to better understanding this fine old instrument were the women who play her, the man who restored her during the pandemic’s darkest days and the 28-year-old priest who bridges old and new at Good Shepherd. In a nearby pew, organ restorer Jim Lane, who knows the Gratian’s innards as intimately as Janet knows her flashiness, gently nodded in time.
Three years earlier, Janet, fresh out of college and working for Terrell State Hospital, had become Good Shepherd’s organist. The organ “went from barely being able to accompany a hymn to a roar,” said Janet, who played regularly at Good Shepherd for 30 years and still helps out on special occasions. Tracker refers to the mechanical linkage between keys and pedals pressed by the organist and the valves that allow air to flow into pipes of the corresponding note.
An electric blowing motor eventually was installed to put constant pressure into a regulating device, called the reservoir, which stores the wind for greater demand but holds it back when appropriate. “I love that the church has done this,” Sherilyn said. “An electronic organ would have cost half of this. This is amazing that we did this for this precious and important instrument.”
“Not only does the instrument make your heart sing, but the people do the same thing,” said Mike, who lives in Rockwall and has attended Good Shepherd since 1998.
