The supermarket giant has ditched cash at 40 of its in-store cafes with customers forced to pay by card at self-service machines - but the move has been branded 'mad'
Tesco has made the decision to remove cash payments from 40 of its cafes, requiring customers to pay via card at self-service machines. Martin Quinn from Campaign for Cash criticised the move as a "mad decision" saying: "Many of the customers will be elderly or retirees who want to order in person, not press a computer screen."
Ms. Gayton also expressed her concerns to the Telegraph newspaper, which reported on the story last week, saying: "Elderly people go to these places for chit-chat, to talk about the weather and about what's happening in their lives." She raised concerns for visually impaired customers, asking: "How are visually impaired people meant to cope? ". Mr Quinn continued his criticism by suggesting that Tesco's approach sends a message of unwelcome to cash users, saying: "As the vast majority of those going to the cafes will be cash users, what they are really saying is that they don't want your custom."
One social media user shared their experience: "At a Tesco cafe and you can't order and talk to someone anymore, you have to use a machine. There's been many confused old people."
