Perhaps Caserio will sell a first-rounder to trade back for more picks, as the Patriots did nine times while he was New England’s director of player personnel from 2008 to 2020. But the Texans are not a perennial Super Bowl contender.
“It’s important for the future, but it’s about now,” Smith said. “We talked about picks No. 3, No. 13 and others that we have, and that just says that everything is on the table… This isn’t my first rodeo, but I can’t remember when we’ve had two first-round picks. I know I like that position now. Didn’t like it an awful lot last year when we were losing some games, but we like right now. And again, we are expecting to get impact players.
Caserio said the Texans “want to be responsible” with their first-round picks and are “not going to do anything haphazardly.” There’s certainly a precedent of urgency for the front office to get these decisions right. The Dolphins, who acquired two first-round picks by trading Tunsil to the Texans in 2019, are still floundering for their first playoff berth since 2016 and fired coach Brian Flores in January despite rebounding to 9-8 after a 1-7 start.
Whoever the Texans pick at No. 3 or No. 13 will immediately become a fixture in the foundation Caserio and Co. spent the past year constructing. They’ll become the most visible talents within a core of key players unearthed during a 2021 season in which the Texans fielded a cap-clearing roster made up mostly of veterans on one-year contracts and rookies. They’ll become what Andre Johnson was to a 2003 team that desperately needed a star.
They’ll become the first day one selections since the Texans picked Tytus Howard No. 23 overall in 2019, an acquisition that preceded their fourth AFC South championship in five years, the team’s last winning season before the franchise began to unravel.
