The Texans are trading a late-round draft pick for Tampa Bay Bucs guard Shaq Mason, a source with knowledge of the deal confirmed to the Chronicle.Mason’s addition bolsters the Texans offensive line, something new coach DeMeco Ryans said he was intent on fixing this offseason. “Everything starts up front,” Ryans said at the NFL scouting combine. “It’s definitely a priority to address the defensive line and the offensive line. I think on both sides, the teams that are successful — you see Philly; you see — their fronts are outstanding.”
The Texans struggled with protecting up the middle. Mason, who is 6-1, 311 pounds, played with the Patriots from 2015-21 before he joined the Bucs last season. So he has ties with general manager Nick Caserio. The Bucs traded a fifth-round pick for him to reunite him with Tom Brady. He’s started in all 17 games for the Bucs last season, and has started in 115 games in the past eight years. He’ll likely replace guard A.J. Cann as a starter to pair with Kenyon Green.
