The Aggies will face Florida on Thursday in the SEC tournament in Tampa, Fla.
COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M started SEC play with four straight wins and wrapped up SEC play with four straight wins.
A&M was picked 12th out of 14 teams in a preseason SEC media poll. The winner of A&M-Florida will take on No. 1 seed and SEC regular season champion Auburn on Friday. The Tigers, who held the No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press poll for part of the season, wrapped up the regular season at No. 5. Florida lost four of its last seven regular season games and while the Aggies enter the league tournament as the hotter squad, each program needs a victory on Thursday to keep alive its NCAA Tournament hopes. A&M’s biggest deterrent this season was the head-scratching eight-game losing streak in the middle of league play.
A&M honored four seniors on Saturday night: Jackson, Jalen Johnson, Everett Vaughn and Zach Walker in the Aggies’ final regular season home game. They could potentially have another home game in the 32-team National Invitation Tournament , should they fail to make the NCAA Tournament. Jackson led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with a dozen points in making five of his six shots from the field in that span, including 2-of-3 3-pointers. Jackson scored a team-high 18 points on Saturday and led the Aggies with 28 points on Wednesday in their 87-71 victory at No. 25 Alabama, and he’s scored in double figures in 13 consecutive games.
