Texas board of education member: Gov. Abbott, call off STAAR testing | Opinion
Gov. Abbott can help the school and hospital staffing crises by halting STAAR and sending Texas military forces to help with COVID-19 testing.
As commander in chief of the Texas Military Forces, Abbott should immediately reassign the Texas Army National Guard and Texas State Guard to support hospitals and COVID-19 testing sites across the state. In order to minimize COVID-19 outbreaks and return employees to work more quickly, we must also increase access to testing at the community level.
Specific to schools, I have asked the governor to acknowledge the learning disruptions our students have once again experienced as a result of the state’s failure to contain the spread of COVID-19 and to cancel the 2021-22 STAAR test administration. Our proud guardsmen and women are highly trained to respond to this sort of emergency. If we are to end this surge quickly and with minimal disruptions, we must engage their outstanding medical and logistical expertise for the benefit of all Texans.
