On Tuesday’s call, Bishop Edward Burns of the Roman Catholic diocese of Dallas and the Rev. Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas, praised Abbott.“Thank you also for this wonderful and necessary initiative for parental choice,” Burns said. Jeffress said cultural “rot” is increasing and school choice will slow a deterioration of social morals.
“For many on the left, public schools have become not educators but indoctrinators of the leftist agenda,” he said. “Parents need an out for that.” Former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman of Houston, now a pastor, and Dave Welch, head of the U.S. Pastor Council, were among other clergy members speaking on the call.Abbott is asking pastors to plug school choice legislation during worship services on Sunday, Oct. 15.“Speak from the pulpit to your congregation and let them know how important this is to the moral fabric of the future of Texas.”.
