The Texas Legislature passed a bill late Tuesday that would immediately outlaw abortion if the U.S. Supreme Court overturnsHouse Bill 1280 is referred to as a “trigger ban."If signed by Gov. Greg Abbott, which is largely expected, the bill would make getting an abortion a first-degree felony. Doctors who provide the procedure would be subject to criminal, civil and disciplinary penalties.
Dr. Joe Pojman, executive director for the Texas Alliance for Life, applauded lawmakers for passing HB 1280. But Aimee Arrambide, the executive director of Avow, a pro-abortion rights organization, said the bill is “one of the most extreme trigger bans” in the country.
