Texas lawmakers speak out about WNBA All-Star Brittney Griner being detained in Russia
FILE - In this April 20, 2013 file photo, Phoenix Mercury's Brittney Griner, the No. 1 overall pick the WNBA draft, speaks during a news conference in Phoenix. The WNBA is launching a campaign to market specifically to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community. It’s the first league to design such a campaign. Griner, who is one of a handful of WNBA athletes who have publicly identified themselves as lesbian, was happy the league was embracing the community.
Allred said Griner’s case is “very concerning,” especially given the strained relations between the U.S. and Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. The goal, he said, is to keep Griner's situation separate from ongoing geopolitical strife and ensure that her legal rights are upheld. “I’m very concerned because I think it’s very unusual and I think it is a violation of international norms and just not the way things are done,” Allred said. “Three weeks is a long time to be held.”
“We want to make sure this doesn’t become a situation like other Texans who have been detained in Russia … who have been detained and sentenced to long prison terms on trumped-up charges,” Allred said.
