‘A powerful moment’: Texas State plans program for students with intellectual, developmental disabilities

Texas State is planning a new program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilitiesStarting this fall, students with intellectual and developmental disabilities will be able to attend Texas State University as a part of the school’s new four-year inclusive post-secondary education program.
The program is called Bobcat RISE, an acronym for Resilience, Independence, Self-determination and Empowerment. University officials say the aim is to give students a residential college experience that is independent but also supported. The goal is for the program to help facilitate self-reliant living and employment for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
For the first semester, the program will admit five students, with another 10 to be admitted in 2024. Each student will enter into personal-learning agreements with Bobcat RISE staff and attend campus activities or join student organizations. Additionally, RISE students will take part in sessions focused on adjusting to college life, learning independent living skills, career development and financial literacy. Service learning and paid internships will also be available for students.
This program will be the third by a Texas university for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, following Texas A&M University and the University of North Texas.
