Many characters in the MCU had the potential to thwart Thanos' plan in Avengers: Infinity War, but he chose to strike after several of them had died.

Initially depicted as an all-powerful but well-intentioned god-like character, Ego soon revealed himself to be seeking universal domination, aiming to transform every planet in the cosmos into an extension of himself.
Ronan's weakness was his ego, and his overwhelming desire to eradicate the Nova Empire and Xandar, which led to him traveling there with the Power Stone first, and eventually being defeated by the Guardians of the Galaxy. If Ronan had met Thanos first, he could have used the Power Stone to destroy Thanos' ship, his entire army, and even the Mad Titan himself.
2 Surtur While Clancy Brown only voiced Surtur for a few brief moments in Thor: Ragnarok, the fire demon still had a pivotal role in the plot of Taika Waititi's MCU debut, particularly since he was prophesied to destroy Asgard and bring about Ragnarök. Initially, Surtur didn't display that much power in his natural form, and perhaps would have been easily defeated by the Mad Titan Thanos.
