“We don’t start nothing, but we don’t take nothing, either,' Astros manager Dusty Baker said following Tuesday's heated game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
HOUSTON — They may be playing baseball in the middle of a world-wide pandemic, where social distancing is strongly encouraged, and breathing on one another is prohibited. But sorry, it wasn’t about to stop three years of built-up anger and rage.
Just like that, the two benches cleared, the bullpens emptied, and everyone was standing, yelling, and gesturing in front of the Dodgers’ dugout. Kelly stared at him, and deeply yawned for effect, as Bregman lowered his head, dropped his batting gloves, and headed to first base for a walk without uttering a word.
Said Kelly: “I don’t remember the words. Was a kind of in-the-moment-type thing. I guess my expression was what I interpreted in my head and what he was saying.’’ It will be interesting if the MLB office comes down on Kelly, or anyone else, in this new era of baseball. The safety and health protocols require that players and managers always maintain physical distancing, and specifically warns against fighting or getting near anyone in arguments.
