Announcing: The 10 biggest philanthropic donations and pledges of 2019
Two of the world’s billionairesmore than $1 billion dollars each, while at least a dozen other members of the Three Comma Club pledged or made gifts in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Some institutions, such as the California Institute of Technology, received the largest financial gifts ever.tallied the biggest reported charitable gifts and pledges made in 2019 to come up with the ten largest. To be sure, bigger gifts don’t always mean they are better or more effective.
Eight of the ten biggest gifts and pledges are going directly to nonprofit operating organizations like universities and aid groups or service providers, while the remaining two gifts—the two biggest on this list—were a shift of assets into charitable foundations. In the U.S., charitable foundations are required to pay out 5% of their assets each year, and many foundations keep their giving to around that level.
