The ‘bobafication’ of American chain drinks is here.
. They’re not wrong—and yeah, I find it upsetting that many of these companies are pretending to create something totally new and aren’t properly crediting Asians for these inventions. While I didn’t grow up going to boba shops andas a huge part of my Asian American identity, I am still an Asian born in America and thus unfortunately have a complex about representation that's based in a variety of traumas that I will not be getting into here. I get it.
But for better or for worse, the culture around boba shops has always been about copying each other’s homework. Boba culture has long been an arms race to find the hot new drink at any given moment: Shops experiment with new toppings and drinks at an incredible pace, expanding the boba canon quickly.
So how angry can I be that the culture is flowing beyond the confines of boba shops, and that more people want to drink boba, and that more boba shops are opening near me, and that an enticing new beverage seems to materialize every time I go back? How can I say no to new drinks that contain more ingredients than one healthy adult human should be consuming by straw? And why would I want to?
Sometimes a thing grows so big, shines so bright, that of course others will want to sit in its warmth. Let them do it, and see if it brings more people closer to the sun—“the sun” in this scenario being boba shops that obviously know how to make a better drink than chains like Peet’s or Starbucks. I’m ready for America to go into bobafication overload. The masses will learn to boba, and man, will they love it.
