Kevin Durant wanted out, then Kyrie Irving was suspended. Now the no-nonsense Brooklyn Nets are the hottest team in the NBA.
Then came a sequence of uncharacteristically tidy fixes. The team opted instead to promote assistant coach Jacque Vaughn to the head job, and Irving issued a public apology. Since Irving’s return on November 20, the Nets have won 16 of 19 games—and done little else.
The Nets’ roster, unburdened for now of its distractions, remains one of the most talented in recent history. The only basketball knock against Irving, over the years, has been his attendance; a reel of swerving drives and ambidextrous lay-ins, and a pile of same-as-ever box scores, show that he’s no worse for having missed a sizable chunk of his team’s home games last season after refusing the Covid vaccine.
