Realistic crash scene warns Atascocita students of drinking and driving consequences
A two-car pileup was staged with victims at the Atascocita High School Shattered Dreams program at the high school on Thursday and Friday. The program addresses the consequences of drunk and distracted driving by teens.A horrific crash scene unfolds, with two cars - one flipped over - enmeshed together, with seemingly lifeless bodies of young people laying on the ground, while another unmoving body hangs out the window of one of the cars.
“I was teaching sociology and I wanted to bring it back. I talked to my students and they were on board and we put it together and said let’s make this a deal every two years. That way, everybody in high school gets to see it at least once,” he said.The crash scene drama brought together officers from the Harris County Precinct 4 Constables office, members of the Atascocita Fire Department and officials from the Rosewood Funeral Home.
The event also featured an overnight stay at the school by students. Speakers during this portion of the program included: Ian Cock of PHI Aviation, a Department of Public Safety officer, Thornton and Dr. Rajagopal, a cardiologist and surgeon who performed open heart surgery on celebrity Mr. T.
Tumlison said he was happy to see the Shattered Dreams program return to Atascocita High because of the positive reactions that past programs had generated. “A lot of kids who’ve been involved with us, after seeing the videos and hearing all the speakers, they don’t even want to text and drive,” he said.
“A few years ago, the Atascocita High School community did lose a couple of students from drunk driving, so this program does hit fairly close to home,” he said.
