When emergency services phone operator Gabe receives a suspicious call from a woman he knows, his life is turned upside down
, a fast-paced thriller that’s genuinely thrilling. Taking its name from the setting of its opening scenes – a call centre in Glasgow, where handlers dispatch emergency services to desperate members of the public – the show’s premise set a high bar for narrative tension and kept up an impressive clip throughout the episode.
But as the baby’s cries rang out, the tension melted into relief – still, no chance to dwell. No sooner had Gabriel and his colleagues blown off some steam with a couple of good-natured jokes than the phone rang again – and this time, the call would change its handler’s life as well as the caller’s.
Catching the attention of his colleagues, Gabriel tried to convince the caller to share her location while they tracked her – but before he could make much progress, the plot delivered another jolt: “Gabo, is that you?” And while the call ended before he could confirm who was asking, his reaction suggested he had more than an inkling.
