covered roughly 10,000 women’s ready-to-wear and couture shows—that’s about 1,000 shows per year, and that’s a lot! Intriguingly, the seeds of many issues that dominated the decade, and which will still matter in 2020—seasonality, sustainability, and scale—were present in the very first show of the decade past, Josephus Thimister’s Fall 2010 haute couture, which combined men’s and women’s clothes, incorporated upcycling, and was available to customers in-season.
On the eve of 2020, we combed through this massive archive and handpicked the collections, trends, accessories, and looks that mattered most. Spoiler alert: Mixed in among dad sneakers and mini bags are plenty of hoodies, a lot of grunge, and some achingly romantic dresses. Hands down, the biggest change agent in the industry was Instagram; the holy grail of the decade became “Instagrammable moments”—think of them as visual equivalents of bolded exclamation points. Fashion shows are now designed around the concept, as are lucrative careers. What is an influencer, after all, but someone who can engagingly create and string these fleeting moments together?
Another big story of the 2010s? The “drop,” in which high fashion adopted the streetwear model. Now pieces——count more than collections. Indeed, the days of narrative fashion, fantastical shows, and aloof muses are over. People don’t want to hear a story; they want an experience. And they want to star in their own show.
This was also the decade when who was wearing the clothes became as—or perhaps more—important than the garments themselves. Belatedly, no doubt, the industry has moved toward inclusion and diversity of race, age, sexual orientation, size, and ability. Representation matters. What’s clear is that there is room, and need, for many different voices on the front lines and behind the scenes in fashion. Let’s hope we hear them roar in the 2020s.
