The House of Representatives voted to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the speakership, with all present Democrats and eight Republicans voting to remove him from his post.
The motion to vacate was brought by Rep. Matt Gaetz on Monday, with a motion to table the attempt to oust McCarthy failing shortly prior to the vote. The ouster of McCarthy means the House will not be able to function until a new speaker has been elected.
McCarthy had to endure 15 rounds of voting during the speaker election in January after several members of the Republican conference refused to support the California Republican. Now that he has been removed, another vote on who will become the next House speaker will occur only nine months after McCarthy first secured the speaker's gavel.
