The Expendables movies have always drawn on '80s action cinema for inspiration, so it may as well go full retro and that the series back to the past.
The next Expendables should go full retro and just take the titular crew back to the 1980s. Throughout the '80s and '90s, the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Wesley Snipes were action icons, but moving into the 2000s, their brand of R-rated action started to die out. Major studios began moving away from movie stars and started focusing on making franchises themselves the factor that drew audiences in.
The Expendables Already Set Up A 1980s Prequel The Expendables 3 sees Stallone's Barney chase after Mel Gibson's Stonebanks, an ex-member of the team who became an arms dealer. The addition of Wesley Snipes' Doc shed some light on how the Expendables were first founded, which involved carrying out dangerous missions for the CIA during the '80s.
