"We're creating a department store of fun," says Michael Harrison, the co-founder of Gravity which is due to open on 1 August. "For me, it's really difficult to think of an example where you have 25% of something that it exists in the UK that is no longer required. And so you're not going to solve that sort of a problem by tinkering around the edges," he says.

Stockton-on Tees has one of the boldest plans to reshape its entire town centre. It has decided to demolish a large part of its high street.
