Unwanted robotexting is a growing problem across the U.S., and the FCC is stepping in with new rules for the first time to protect consumers.
Robotexts can be identified if they come from invalid, unallocated, or unused numbers and includes numbers that are identified by government agencies as “not used for texting,” the FCC reported. The FCC also proposed that carriers put flagged numbers under a Do-Not-Call Registry that would protect consumers from companies sending their information to hundreds, if not thousands, of marketers stemming from a single consent form.
“These robotexts are making a mess of our phones,” FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said in an emailed statement to Gizmodo. “They are reducing trust in a powerful way to communicate.” The new rules received support from the Attorneys General from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, but Rosenworcel said, “We are not stopping here.
