Democrats are closer than they’ve been in decades to winning statewide in Texas. But a looming clash between two of the party's top prospects could blow their shot.
Donald Trump won the state in 2016 by 9 points, down from Mitt Romney's 16-point win in 2012. Then in 2018, then-Rep. Beto O'Rourke came within 3 points of knocking off GOP Sen. "There's no doubt that Texas is in play for Democrats in 2020. There's so much excitement. For us to start closing the gap in 2016, then what happened in 2018 — for sure Texas Democrats are in play in 2020," said Jaclyn Uresti, who was Hillary Clinton's state director in Texas in 2016.
