Five Nights at Freddy's includes multiple Easter eggs that reference the original video games. This provides an extra level of entertainment for the franchise's dedicated fanbase. Additionally, the movie expands upon the games' lore, including solving a long-running debate about the characters Spring Bonnie and Springtrap. These characters are both costume variations of the Bonnie animatronic with an alteration allowing the primary villain, William Afton, to control it from within.
The books further complicate the issue. Five Nights at Freddy's: The Ultimate Guidebook shows Spring Bonnie as having a different head and endoskeleton compared to Springtrap. The head and jaw of Springtrap are narrower. Moreover, Spring Bonnie uses Plushtrap's interior instead of Springtrap's. This points to the characters being different.
