Critics aren’t denying the importance of India’s sanitation improvements. They’re arguing that this progress would be better recognized by awarding someone else.

“Precisely because the Gates Foundation is held in such high regard for its invaluable contributions to sustainable development in India, the decision to honor PM Modi will also undercut and demoralize the beleaguered civil society of India. The award will signal the international community’s willingness to overlook, and remain silent, in the face of the Indian government’s brazen violations of human rights principles.

People like her aren’t denying the importance of India’s sanitation improvements. They’re arguing that this progress would be better recognized by awarding someone else. Melinda Gates herself said to two other politicians on day 2 of the glitzy Goalkeepers event, “Thank you both for showing a values-based leadership.” Clearly this focus on values-based leadership didn’t extend to Modi.

Unfortunately, the Gates Foundation’s feting of Modi overshadowed the other honorees at its 2019 Goalkeepers events. These included 14-year-old children’s rights activist Payal Jangid, who herselfGetty Images Bill Gates personally presented the award to Modi on September 24. The Indian leader’s speech, which was received with muted applause, frequently invoked the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi, who stressed the importance of sanitation in India. He also mentioned the particular benefits to women of safe, secure sanitation.

Ultimately, it appears that the Gates Foundation won’t be using this imbroglio as a teachable moment. Mark Suzman, the foundation’s chief strategy officer, noted today that they won’t be changing course. Referring to their mission of targeted poverty eradication, he said, “I don’t think we’ll see any change in our models of partner.”
