It's been named among the best in the UK to see spring flowers in bloom
Spring is upon us which means Mother Nature is finally waking up from its wintery slumber. At this time of year gardens begin to erupt in colour as daffodils, bluebells and more emerge from the earth.
There are dozens of places across Greater Manchester where you can admire these colourful spring displays - and one garden in particular has been named among the best in the UK to visit in early spring. Dunham Massey features in the Guardian’s list of 12 gardens which are worth heading in the coming weeks.
The list included scenic spots across the country, with Castle Howard in North Yorkshire and Seaton Delevall Hall in Northumberland among the other northern locations to be featured. Nestled on the edge of Greater Manchester and Cheshire, Dunham Massey features one of the UK’s biggest winter gardens which comes to life from January to early spring.The Guardian recommends looking out for ‘starry blue scilla and Glory-of-the-snow’ this month, joining the earlier blooming snowdrops and narcissi.
As well as its stunning gardens, Dunham Massey is known for its ancient parkland, home to a herd of fallow deer. It’s the ideal place to go to for a walk in the spring and there’s more than 300 acres of it to explore. Should the weather be unforgiving, Dunham Massey’s beautiful Georgian house is now open again to visitors after closing for the winter. The 17th-century building features ornate rooms and a one of the National Trust’s largest collections, which tell the history of the building.
