Finding a Conservative voter in the safe Labour seat of Stretford and Urmston is not too difficult. But on our visit to speak to voters, finding one who thinks the Tories have got a chance of winning the General Election on July 4 was more like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Sitting Labour MP Andrew Western had a near-10,000 majority when he won the 2022 by-election following the retirement of Kate Green, when she became Greater Manchester’s deputy mayor for policing and crime. At Stretford Mall, where there is a huge amount of redevelopment taking place, shoppers were in a talkative mood as the election campaigning by the major parties got into full swing.
Ron Austin, 66, was confident Labour would hold the Stretford and Urmston seat and form the next government. “I will vote Labour,” he said. “They always get in here anyway, so I would put my house on it. But her sister said: “I always vote Labour because I believe in mild socialism. I believe in a free National Health Service, and I don’t like the privatisation that's being allowed to happen in it.
"That’s why a lot of people won’t vote at all. Whoever comes into power must address issues around mental health.” Sue Goddard was out with her mother-in-law Lilian enjoying a morning shopping. Lilian, 90, said: “I am disillusioned because the politicians are just saying things that get them votes. But I don’t believe what they’re saying.”
