An event held at United Way on Tuesday morning honored just that, as well as the non-profit's founder, Bernice Skirboll, who helped pave the way for social change and dedicated more than half her life to the healing power of friendship. "I started with a dream that I would help people on their road to wellness, help them lead a more productive life, and it's gone so far beyond my initial hopes and dreams," said Skirboll. "Little did I know that what I started in Rochester as a part time job, would bring friends to people around the world and would be a global program on four continents.
"I met her and she was just, I can still picture the smile and the giggle, and the laugh on her face. We just really became very good friends," said Pam Giambrone, a volunteer with Compeer. Tuesday was also World Mental Health Day, a fitting day for Compeer International to hold this event.
