While it’s tempting to stay in Sestri, Liguria is also home to Cinque Terre , a string of villages along seven miles of rugged coast. I’ve been told to brace myself for crowds , but an early start makes for a tranquil morning.
Over centuries, farmers have carefully built terraces to cultivate grapes and olives on steep ridges above the Mediterranean. Mechanisation of any process is nearly impossible and “vertical farming” is back-breaking work.For generations, workers wound cloth into crown-like circles on top of their heads to steady heavy baskets, taking care not to fall. Some still do this, although the straw baskets are these days big plastic crates, and monorails help the job along.
In the other direction – travelling west up the coast from Sestri – is Portofino, loved by everyone from Sinatra to the. Bathed in sunshine and dripping in pink wisteria, the magnificent old hotels, dotted among the hills, ooze glamour. Over an eye-poppingly expensive lunch on the harbour, I watch a woman running on a treadmill on the back of a superyacht and reflect on my life choices.
This tiny speck on the map – an oasis of nature, history and relaxation – brings new meaning to the word “idyllic”. After a swim in crystal-clear waters, I order a bowl of salty chips at a treehouse-like bar on the bay. Above me, the lush, green Mediterranean scrub – mostly pine and holm oak – reaches up to an open sky, while below, in the aquamarine sea, children splash and play.
