EXCLUSIVE: ECHO Everton reporter Chris Beesley speaks to Fernando Lopes, the president of Beto's first football club Uniao Tires
Beto might feel like a throwback to Everton centre-forwards of yesteryear but the man who helped him take the first steps on his rapid rise from amateur football to the Premier League believes the player is “unique.”
When he started his career with Uniao Tires, a team located in an unassuming village a dozen miles west of the capital who play in the Lisbon FA’s League, to make ends meet, Beto worked for the fast food restaurant chain KFC but while their Boneless Banquet meal typically retails for £9:79, the 25-year-old striker cost EFC a cool £25.8million.
Along the way, Beto, who was a cast off from Benfica’s youth academy, has certainly transformed his game and Lopes believes much of that is down to the player’s personality. While he was not a naturally gifted football as a youngster, it was a strong work ethic both on and off the field that enabled him to get to the top.
“Beto always made himself available and would train a lot. He always believed that with hard work he could be successful.
