Summary The world may know Leonardo da Vinci as a great artist, but few have thought about the person behind the legend. Jim Capobianco focuses on the humanity that drove the art in his new animated movie The Inventor. He wrote and directed the project, with Pierre-Luc Granjon serving as co-director, after first stepping into da Vinci's shoes in 2009 with his silent short film Leonardo. This time there are not only voices but also songs, which were written by his collaborator Alex Mandel.
France aside, this isn't your first dance with Leonardo da Vinci. What draws you to his story, and why is animation the right way to tell it? I feel like the animation style that you've used conveys that very well. I love the combination of the 2D hand-drawn and the stop-motion. How much harder is that to do in this day and age with CG everywhere?
Jim Capobianco: Stephen was one of my first picks for Leonardo because he's a polymath himself, and he's kind of like a living Leonardo da Vinci in a lot of ways. His voice was right. I didn't want the booming kind of Gandalf voice; I really wanted a softer voice with wit and intelligence that would come out. And so, Stephen was just perfect for that. Then with Daisy, I loved the power in her voice. She also had this insecurity, or a little bit of a warmness to her voice.
Jim Capobianco: We would work back and forth. I've known Alex [for years]. He did the soundtrack for my short film Your Friend the Rat that I made at Pixar, so we have been friends and have known each other since then. I told him about this project way early on, so he was already playing with themes and pieces of music.
