When she applied to join the University of Puerto Rico’s Reserve Officers Training Corp, she was told no — women weren’t allowed in the program.
After graduating high school at 16, Custodio pursued a military career like her father. A 22-year veteran of the Air Force, Vincent T. Davis embarked on a second career as a journalist and found his calling. Observing and listening across San Antonio, he finds intriguing tales to tell about everyday people. He shares his stories with Express-News subscribers every Monday morning.She met her husband, Edwin Custodio, while working in the accounting department of Puerto Rico International Airlines.
Through research, she learned there was an age requirement — candidates had to be under 26 and a half years — she was weeks away from the cutoff. In 2018, Custodio’s story went global in “Fighting Spirit,” a Modelo Especial commercial about Latinos who have contributed to the United States. Flying, traveling and living around the world fueled her passion. Custodio learned to love other cultures as her family traveled to Taiwan, Iran and Paraguay with her father, Ismael Nevarez, a U.S. Army sergeant and exchange military attache.In 1980, she was stationed at Medina Base Annex at Lackland Air Force Base for the flight screening pilot officer program. After being commissioned as a second lieutenant, Custodio headed to pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio.
