“It’s difficult to have another family living in the same house without creating additional space. Space is absolutely important. People on the luckier end of the spectrum will be able to convert outbuildings. If you can’t create extra space, you’ll have to look at remodelling the existing areas. This usually involves creating internal self-contained apartments. People might consider turning a home office or a spare room downstairs into a bedroom with an en-suite attached.
“We’ve never argued. I think because we’ve been open and honest about how we wanted this to work from the beginning. I mean the other day, I was working late and mum made us all a spaghetti bolognaise and brought it over and the next day I took her to her hospital appointment. It’s quite transactional like that.
“She’s not able to drive at the moment. So when we first started living together, she was doing school runs for us and it’s shifted a bit the other way now.”While most people convert an existing property to make it work for three generations, property developers are beginning to pick up on the demand , and design homes specifically around the needs of bigger families and different generations.
“Our answer has been to give the family as many flexible spaces as possible. We essentially designed a larger four-bed family home, with a mix of bedrooms and living spaces, adjoined to a smaller home. Both have their own facilities, such as front doors, bathrooms, parking spaces and even gardens, but crucially they have shared communal spaces where they can come together.
