Broadway has traditionally not responded favourably when it comes to British plays which chart the implosion of an American institution. Lucy Prebble’s, about the Texan energy giant’s demise, famously bombed in New York, so there may have been initial trepidation around the transfer of Sam Mendes’s epic National Theatre production exploring the downfall of Lehman Brothers.
The sweep of Power’s work is dizzying, as he charts the rise and fall not simply of one corporation, but of capitalism itself, as the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers triggered the global financial crisis. There are subtle nods to this ultimate demise right from the start, as German Jewish immigrant Henry Lehman arrives in New York in 1844 and heads to Alabama to establish a small haberdashery shop.
The three actors play every role, big and small, down the decades and the centuries; this is nothing less than an astonishing achievement in performance. The weighty is cleverly sprinkled with the playful; Fraser, who is a particular delight, has great fun portraying a range of potential suitors for an especially demanding Lehman scion.
