But for the families whose lives she destroyed, it likely means very little. Their pain is unimaginable. And their devastating victim impact statements lay bare the sheer horror of Letby’s crimes. Her year-long murder spree began in June 2015, and she struck mostly on night shifts when she was alone on the ward looking after sleeping babies at the Countess of Chester hospital.

But Dame Christine Beasley, a former chief nursing officer, called for the investigation to be strengthened and led by a judge, warning that witnesses ‘can opt out’ of the inquiry ‘if they want to’. Alison Kelly was the chief nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital while nurse Letby killed the babies and attempted to murder six others between June 2015 and June 2016.

“You acted in a way that was completely contrary to the normal human instincts of nurturing and caring for babies and in gross breach of the trust that all citizens place in those who work in the medical and caring professions. The babies you harmed were born prematurely and some were at risk of not surviving but in each case you deliberately harmed them, intending to kill them.”

The killer nurse jailed just before Letby began her attacks Many of you will remember the shocking case of Victorino Chua - the nurse jailed for life after poisoning several patients with insulin at Stockport’s Stepping Hill Hospital in 2012. And as John Scheerhout explains here, the parallels between Chua and Letby are striking.

The learning from the police investigation into Chua was crucial for the Cheshire Police investigation into Letby. The detectives who brought Chua to justice ‘offered advice’ to the Letby investigators, particularly around the use of synthetic insulin as a weapon.Covid increase happening sooner than anticipated Covid cases and hospitalisations are on the rise earlier than expected this year, according to Dr Helen Wall.

“At the moment, we’re just a little bit ahead of where we were this time last year. We’re on a bit of an upward trajectory now. It’s by no means massive – but there is certainly growth of Covid, and if that is to continue, it would be a concern.” In fact, those that have known her longest say Ella was a footballing genius from the age of five, when she joined local junior club Astley and Tyldesley. Lorraine Warwick-Ellis, Girls section development officer at the club, told Chris Slater: “She was so good. She was better than a lot of the lads. Miles better. The buzz around the place when she started playing was 'Just get the ball to Ella and she'll do the rest'. She was phenomenal. I remember everyone talking about her.
