Frosty reception for Tories as they roll into town PLUS More reports on scrapping of HS2 AND Look to the Medicis, says Gove

Meanwhile, activist Steve Bray - normally seen on the green outside the House of Parliament - made his feelings clear during The Bruges Group's fringe event today, yelling: "Where are your Brexit benefits?" before being escorted out after a scuffle. Away from the lashing rain and the harsh reception, Conservative members cocooned inside Manchester Central, spoke of their successes since the start of Rishi Sunak's premiership. Although, as Daily Mirror associate editor Kevin Maguire points out, they were speaking to far smaller than expected crowds with ‘hundreds’ of empty seats at Defence Secretary Grant Shapps’ speech.

But Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner said the plan reveals a ‘special kind of arrogance’ from a Prime Minister who was previously caught on tape ‘boasting that he had swiped money from areas like ours to now expect local people to be grateful for a promise to hand a tiny fraction of it back’. His chancellor Jeremy Hunt however, did fly here, taking a British Airways flight from London. Mr Hunt said a train cancellation due to industrial action was the reason for him choosing the high-polluting mode of transport.

“There has also been some progress - the new 'Trailblazer' devolution deal giving Greater Manchester more power to make its own decisions, and more than £1bn of funding for public transport leading to the launch of the Bee Network. "We have had multiple failures, we have had 13 years with a Tory PM. We have had so many of them too - you'd be a fool to think otherwise,” 18-year-old Tom Tristem told Ethan from inside the conference centre.

"Some people might regard that as absurdly archaic and what has renaissance Italy got to teach us about life in Manchester in the 21st century?. But the key thing there is that if cities flourish, it's not just about infrastructure. It's not just about the private sector. It's about culture and beauty. It's about civic involvement and democracy as well."

“This is why we as MPs, whose job it is to vote over whether tax should go up or down, are making a stand to make it clear that we will not vote for further tax rises that increase the tax burden. I believe in my constituents and their ability to spend their own money.” Neil McAllister, manager at Parmogeddon, told reporter Ethan Davies his team will take up residency at Freight Island for Christmas - but have no permanent location as yet. “We have had a moan and worry but that’s it. We are lucky to have a brand to an extent, it’s s*** for the newer businesses,” he said.
