Adam Virgo has a foot in both camps and he sees no losers from the imminent £25m deal
Adam Virgo believes transfer market shrewdies Celtic and Brighton have both hit the jackpot with Matt O’Riley ’s record-breaking move to the south coast.
“I totally understand the price tag. Brighton are definitely not overpaying. He could be worth double in a year. It’s the going rate in the market. If Matt even scores 10 goals from midfield in the Premier League then, all of a sudden, folk are sniffing about him and we’re talking £50m-£60m. “More recently they’ve gone slightly above fees paid in the past. Brajan Garuda from Mainz and, last summer, Carlos Baleba from Lille were around the £25 million plus mark. Yet they may feel they’re getting a BARGAIN here with Matt. Look at Alexis Mac Allister, Moses Caicedo, Cucurella, the list goes on. They’ve done it time and time again. Those are sales where they’ve tripled, quadrupled what they paid. Matt could be another in that category.
“Goalscoring midfielders have been few and far between. I see where Matt fits in. Matt is coming into a settled team and a well-run club. Just like he had at Celtic, everything around him doesn’t need adjusted. He’s not coming into a team newly-promoted and they need him to step up and go forward straight away. I think he’ll be able to settle and grow into it.”
“I hear it all the time; there’s always going to be that perception that they’re not going to be good enough because they’ve played in the Scottish league. I totally disagree. If Matt had these stats elsewhere everyone would be saying: Wow! Unfortunately, the tag the Scottish Premiership has means there’s often a different reaction. That snobbery from England still exists.”
