Even when you’re strapped for time, and money, you can make something yummy.
Four out of every five meals Americans eat are prepared at home, according to the research firm NPD Group — and that’s up from a decade ago. But at the same time, we’re more time-starved: One in four Americans reports always feeling rushed, while more than half feel rushed at least sometimes, according to a survey from the Pew Research Center.
But after reading this, we wondered: What would a professional chef do with $2 and 10 minutes? Here’s what five pros told us they would make. Note that this assumes you have some spices and basics like butter, garlic and olive oil in your home already, and the prices are per serving .
“Eating on a two-dollar budget is challenging, but you can do it. I grew up poor in Mexico, and if I remember correctly, eggs were our ‘go to’ cheap meal — and they still are,” says Christian Flores, executive chef of Roundabout Grill in Reno, Nev. HelloFresh’s Sidioti says that if you have a little feta and spinach lying around you could make a Greek omelet, or, with some extra salsa, cheddar and frozen corn, a Tex-Mex omelet.
