'We're the first people they're talking to about these experiences they’re having. They are literally shaking and trying not to cry. They're pale. And they're talking about it as war that they were not trained for,' executive producer Krista Vernoff said.
"We’re going to address this pandemic, for sure. There’s no way to be a long-running medical show and not do the medical story of our lifetimes," she said.
Although filming remains stalled indefinitely, writers are working on scripts for the new season, an annual ritual that that includes talking to medical personnel for potential story ideas. But this year's experience has been much different, Vernoff said. Although Vernoff did not reveal specific storylines, it's clear the literal life-and-death decisions COVID-19 has forced upon real doctors will be reflected in the TV series.
