The museum has been closed to visitors since March.
was forced to close its doors on March 13 due to COVID-19 concerns, it felt to many like the ultimate sign that life in New York was—at least for the moment—on hold. Now, with the city in Phase 2 of reopening, the 150-year-old museum is following suit,When the Met finally does reopen at the end of this summer, it will do so only in accordance with city guidelines. “The safety of our staff and visitors remains our greatest concern,” said museum president Daniel H. Weiss in a statement.
If everything goes according to New York’s reopening plan, the city’s museums will get the all clear to open their doors during the final phase of the plan on July 20. Some museums and cultural centers are planning to address the health crisis that kept them closed for months with programs like the New-York Historical Society’s forthcoming outdoor exhibition, “Hope Wanted: New York City Under Quarantine.
Though the Met’s reopening is certainly cause for celebration, it’s worth noting that things won’t exactly be going back to the way they were before quarantine. The museum, and those staffers’ absence is sure to be felt as gallerygoers cautiously reenter the space. Meanwhile, three of the other major art institutions in New York—the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim—have yet to announce reopening plans. Bloomberg reportedthat MoMA director Glenn Lowry told a group museum professionals that he estimated the museum would open sometime between July and September and that it would follow social distancing practices, which could include timed-ticket entry for just 1,000 guests at a time.

A Flood of Sexual Assault Allegations in the Porn Industry Are Met With DeflectionThis month has brought a flood of allegations of sexual abuse in the adult film industry. While the last several years have seen many allegations of on-set boundary violations, this sudden outpouring directed at multiple alleged abusers by over a dozen women is unlike anything the industry has ever seen before. The reactions of those accused, and their defenders, however, are familiar. Again and again, when allegations of abuse arise within the industry, an iteration of the same defense is repeated: She didn’t say anything. She didn’t speak up. I can’t read minds. Concerns raised by accusers around insufficient pre-scene boundary negotiations are ignored, as are the complex power dynamics that make speaking up difficult. The anxieties performers may have about long-term career consequences and the material need for a paycheck are also ignored, positioning the “speak up” defense as an uncomplicated matter of personal responsibility.
