Here are the most popular spots booked for Airbnb stays this Memorial Day weekend amid the pandemic: by AngelAuYeung
This is a trend that Airbnb itself has recognized. Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb, said in a video message posted on the company website on May 15 that since the pandemic began, 60% of its rentals are now booked within a week of checking in. Pre-Covid, such last-minute reservations made up one-third of Airbnb’s bookings.
The travel industry has been hit hard in the last few months as countries and states have implemented travel restrictions and shelter in place orders in an attempt to curb the coronavirus. According to AirDNA, Airbnb’s booking revenue in March was down 25% from the prior year, while April revenue dropped 52%. In April 2019, the company received $3.6 billion in booking revenue . In April of this year, that amount dropped to $1.74 billion, AirDNA estimates.
The spike in bookings for Memorial Day Weekend might be welcome for Airbnb hosts, but it was not necessarily what the company encouraged. In messages posted on its corporate blog in recent weeks, Airbnb encouraged hosts to make their listings available for long-term rentals versus short vacations as a response to seeing how customers were behaving. “In the U.S., for example, bookings for four to six weeks increased by at least 30%,” one Airbnb blog said.
Travel, at least for some, looks to be on the rebound. “Our data is changing every week,” says AirDNA’s Shatford. “But we are seeing this very gradual return to normalcy. People want to get out of San Francisco or New York, and go to the Hamptons or Napa, go anywhere besides their 1-bedroom apartment.”
