In April, a 35ft Scots pine in Dorset was killed by an assailant who drilled holes into its trunk before injecting a toxic chemical 🌳 This is just one case of poisoners murdering trees 🔎 But who is behind the attacks? EtanSmallman explores:
Michael Hallowes, who lives in Chelsea, west London, understands that problem all too well. In 2021, he noticed that birds were no longer roosting in two of the tallest trees in his street – a eucalyptus and false acacia, which had started to go brown and were both legally protected by virtue of being in a conservation area.
In Australia, many authorities take action regardless of whether they have enough evidence to launch a prosecution. In Stirling, Western Australia, about 200 of the 4,500 street trees planted in 2015 had been removed or damaged within a year. The city’s mayor, Giovanni Italiano, said repeat offenders would“to say someone has vandalised a tree on this particular property. If someone has lopped a tree purely and simply to get views of the city it is quite obvious it’s the owner of the property.
“Normally the tree is more valuable [than the fine],” he says. “But you can’t value what you haven’t measured.” Britain’s most expensive tree is a London plane planted in 1789 in Mayfair’s Berkeley Square. Based on its size, condition and the number of people who enjoy it every day, it was valued at £750,000 .
