What kind of country do we live in? How has the past shaped us? And what is really happening in the present? The way we answer those questions matters a great deal to our shared future. In the last 100 years, and to an ever-increasing degree since the dawn of the information age, our answers to those questions have been informed by statistics supplied by government.It is hard to overstate the importance of getting our facts straight concerning statistical measures of well-being.

We also find that the argument that we could fund vast expansions in government benefits by simply taxing high wage-earners more heavily does not hold up when you look at the facts. If we took every penny of after-tax income from the so-called Super Rich, we couldn’t fund our current government for a week. If we took every penny of after-tax income of the top 1/10th of 1% of earners, we couldn’t fund government for a month.
