It was 7pm on Wednesday March 23, 2022, when Lisa Birtwistle called her parents and asked them to put her children to bed.
Dean, a painter and decorator, had downed six pints of Peroni. That evening he collected three bags of cocaine, later admitting he had “sniffed a line to sober himself up”. Lisa’s parents Jim and Elaine sobbed as they told Preston Crown Court how their lives, and the lives of Lisa’s two children, had changed forever as a result of Dean’s dangerous decision to drive that night.
Jim told the court he had been with Lisa throughout her many successes and joys in life. He said he was there when she came into the world and was always there for her. “I was, and still am, the proudest dad”, he said. “Lisa loved her children with all her heart. Eighteen months later I am still waiting for her to walk through the door, saying ‘hello gorgeous girl, hello gorgeous boy’ to them.
But sentencing, Judge Ian Unsworth, said there was only one person to blame. He said: “You drove a vehicle in a highly dangerous manner which led to the death of LIsa Birtwistle, a young woman who was in the prime of her life with so much to live for. Your actions have caused devastation for her family, friends, colleagues and everyone who was touched by her shining presence.
