A huge debate has been raging over the past few days on social media about a legendary birthday party staple which we were positive absolutely everybody had back in the day - but apparently some missed out.
We've always thought top hats were a ubiquitous birthday party treat for Glasgow weans back in the day - but apparently not.
But if the comments from a recent online debate are anything to go by there are many out there who never once sampled the sugary sensation, or so they claim at least.The viral dispute was sparked on Sunday afternoon after X user Ali Struthers queried whether or not top hats were a purely Scottish thing.
The responses to Ali, who posts on X using the handle @AliStruthers, are utterly fascinating and show that there really is a bit of a Scotland-England divide when it comes to the birthday party treats. @LynneOKane2 wrote: "I remember these!! I was born in Glasgow 1973! Moved to England later- sent this to show a few old school friends , they didn’t know them except to say “we loved these, only got them at your house!!”!! Says it all- East Angian kids had no clue"
